Facebook and School Libraries

We live in an age where technology is very important. Social media helps us to stay connected and share information faster. Facebook is a social media giant that came on to the scene in 2004. It's logo appears in many ads and television shows. The phrase "Like us on Facebook"is commonly heard even during local newscasts. Facebook was originally intended to allow people to contact each other, and now it is used by people and organization.

So what does this have to do with a library?…Well, since Facebook is so widely used, especially by students, it makes sense that a library use it to communicate to students and the community about was is going on in the library. Going on Facebook I was able to find quite a few pages created by school libraries. The pages showcase book reviews, events happening in and out of the library, and allow students to see the personalities of their librarians. Scrolling through the pages I was impressed by the content and all the time that was invested into the pages. Unfortunately, there were't many "likes" and comments on the pages.

As a librarian my goal isn't just to get students into the library to read, but to teach them how to use different forms of technology for learning and creative purposes. Creating a Facebook page for a school library is great for promoting the library and reaching out but it must be kept up-to-date and promoted extensively on the campus. Without people visiting the page regularly all the time and hard work go to waste. I feel that Facebook is a great platform to promote the library and get feedback from students and the community. I hope to see more pages devoted to school libraries created in the future.
